Hip Hop Does Not Suck Right Now

So I feel the need to talk about the state of hip hop right now especially after watching that new music video produced by Hopsin. Essentially he and the rest of the world are saying that Hip Hop is incredibad right now because people aren’t rapping about anything anymore. Or in fact, they’re not even using any real lyrics either. Now I call bullshit there sir.

In today’s age the amount of venues that are available for music have increased tremendously over the years and now with the power of the internet we can stream albums before buying them. And with tons of artists trying to make a name for themselves and allowing free download for their music as a form of promotion and networking we’ve opened up a whole new community for music and artists to interact with the people, their fans, and other artists.

So why are we still addressing what seems to be what gets played on the radio or music channels? I did an episode on my podcast about the difference between Mainstream music and Underground and did a survey within a Facebook group as reference and the group seemingly agreed that Underground music was better than mainstream music and they rather listen to that then what gets put out there more so. And for the most part the general masses and whoever reading this article would agree with that statement but also seemingly enough will shrug that thought aside and blatantly consider Hip Hop a hot mess right now.

Now to address what people consider hot garbage in terms of content and lack of lyrics. A new sub genre of Hip Hop has arisen recently known as “Trap” and it takes away from most of what we know of the style of Hip Hop we grew up with. There’s a lot to say about the way it sounds politically but I’m not going to get into because we all understand the difference between what Trap sounds like and what Old School Hip Hop sounds like. But consider how many artists Rap under that genre? What’s a few names that come up? Migos? Future? A$AP Ferg?Fetty Wap? You can name maybe 5-10 rappers that rap with that style. But let’s consider the amount of artists that are overlooked and compare the numbers.

For this year alone here’s the name of the albums and artists who released them:

Joey Bada$$ – B4 Da $$
Lupe Fiasco – Tetsuo and Youth
Big Sean – Dark Sky Paradise
Drake – If You’re Reading This You’re Too Late
Ludacris – Ludaversal
Action Bronson – Mr. Wonderful
Kendrick Lamar – To Pimp A Butterfly
Vince Staples – Summertime 06
Tyler The Creator – Cherry Bomb
Earl Sweatshirt – I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside
Wale – The Album About Nothing
Tech N9ne – Special Effects
A$AP Rocky – At Long Last A$AP
Dr.Dre – Compton A Soundtrack By Dr. Dre
B.o.B. – Psychadelik Thoughtz
Mac Miller – GO:OD A.M.

That’s 16 artists I just named just now with album releases of 2015 and that does not include The Game, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, Public Enemy, Kid Ink, Jay Rock, Chance The Rapper, Flo Rida, Yelawolf, Pitbull, Snoop Dogg, Tyga, Meek Mill, Ghostface Killah, Method Man, Scarface, and Travi$ Scott.

These are all familiar names, names you recognize on the daily whether they used to be part of mainstream at one point or just a name you heard a few times while browsing the web. This list doesn’t even include the underground rappers, the less prominent names that are on the come up working hard to make a name for themselves and pushing to make some level of spotlight. How many of the albums and artists above have you listened to this year? If the case was Trap music is what Hip Hop has turned into then where did I get all those names and albums from? We know for damn sure we can name about 4 artists off that list alone who definitely don’t do Trap (cough cough Kendrick cough cough, Lupe Fiasco cough cough choke). So please get your facts straight before making such a blatant and utter disregard to the state of a very large and powerful community that has affected the lives of millions in the past 3 decades to just say it sucks now because you listened to the same 5 guys on the radio with the same 10 songs for the last 3 months.

Do better humanity do better.

Now back to that hot ass track Hopsin dropped cuz it was dope and I don’t know what he talking about. Extend it Hopsin or Imma get mad.
